Problem
Poultry feed costs are the single largest input burden on smallholder poultry producers in Kenya, while organic waste is landfilled or burned. High-protein feed alternatives are largely imported.
HDIC approach
HDIC develops a Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae production unit, formulates poultry feed on-site, distributes chicks and feed through a farmer network, buys back mature birds and eggs, and returns organic frass to crop farmers as fertiliser.
Objectives
- ◆Establish a BSF production and feed formulation line
- ◆Network contracted smallholder poultry producers with input and buy-back terms
- ◆Divert organic waste from disposal into productive protein
- ◆Return frass fertiliser to crop farmers to close the circular loop
Components
Contracted collection from markets, agro-processors and municipalities.
Larval breeding, feeding and harvest units.
On-site formulation of protein-rich poultry feed.
Chick distribution, feed supply and buy-back contracts.
Frass packaging and delivery to crop growers.
