Waste is an input

Circular Agriculture

Nothing wasted — leftovers from one activity feed the next.

Development challenge

Rural systems throw away calories and nutrients — post-harvest waste, crop residues, organic municipal waste — that could feed livestock, insects and soils.

HDIC approach

HDIC designs each hub as a closed loop: press-cake feeds animals, insects convert waste to protein, frass returns to soils, biomass becomes clean cooking fuel.

Key interventions

  • By-product enterprise development
  • Insect protein (BSF) integration
  • Biomass briquette production
  • Organic fertiliser return flows

Expected outcomes

  • Diversified revenue per hub
  • Reduced waste and emissions
  • Additional smallholder income streams
